This is a large planthopper, about 9cms long, of the order Hemiptera and family Fulgoridae. Known also as a peanut-headed planthopper, a lanternfly, an alligator bug, and a machaca. It feeds on the sap of plants. The false eyes on the open wings serve a defensive function to startle potential predators.
